SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
Read (at least) six books during the summer holidays and fill in the record sheet. Don't forget to bring it back in September to claim your reward. Have fun!
Weeks Beginning 6th July & 13th July 2020
Hello everyone! It was great to catch up with those of you who were able to make our Zoom meeting on Tuesday. It was so lovely for us to be able to see your faces and to hear all about what you've been up to! We are planning to have another Zoom meeting on Tuesday 7th July at 2:30pm and we're hoping you'll be able to make it.
As with our last Zoom, either myself or Mrs George will send out the invitations just before the meeting for you to click on the link.
It'll be lovely to welcome Mrs Bagshaw back into school this week. She has set Topic for the next 2 weeks below and I will be following suit by setting the English and Maths work to take us up to the end of term.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for all your support over the past year and especially the past few months. It hasn't been a year that any of us could have foreseen and was not without its challenges but I think that you have all done an amazing job to support your children. I know it can't have been easy but I really appreciate how hard you have worked to ensure that your children have been able to continue with their learning and I know that this will help them tremendously when school resumes in September.
This Year 1 class will always have a special place in my heart and I have been very fortunate to have ended my career with such a lovely group of children. I wish yourselves and your children all the best for the future. I will miss you all.
I hope that you all have a great Summer and a well-earned break.
Lots of love

Maths Work Last 2 Weeks of Term
Over the next 2 weeks of term we will be focussing on a bit of everything! This will give the children the opportunity to revisit a wide range of aspects of Maths, some of which they may not have covered for a little while.
If the children could spend a little time each day recapping on the following using Hit the Button that would be very helpful;
a) Make 10
b) Addition Facts to 10
c) Subtraction Facts to 10
d) Doubles to 10 + 10
e) Halves to 20
Activities (for 2 weeks)
I have attached below a set of 12 activity mats for your child to choose from. They include a range of aspects of Maths that we've covered this year.
CHALLENGE MATS
I have also attached below a set of more challenging activities if you wish to try those.
English Work for last 2 Weeks of Term
Week beginning 6th July 2020
This week is our final week on diaries where we will ask the children to write their own diary entry from the Great Fire of London.
Activity 1
Re-read the Samuel Pepys' comprehension text from 2 weeks ago and watch the Magic Grandad clip again. (attached week beginning 22nd June). When you have done this, discuss what Samuel Pepys might have done on the Wednesday.
Activity 2
Create a storyboard of what you think Samuel Pepys may have done on the Wednesday. Parhaps he would have ............
a) Got up early and looked out of the window - the flames were getting closer
b) Ran downstairs to tell his servants to bury his cheese and wine and important papers
c) Got dressed and got his cart ready to leave
d) Left London
Activity 3
Hot-seat activity - Pretend you are Samuel Pepys and come up with an adjective (describing word) to describe
a) what you could hear
b) what you could see
c) how you were feeling in each picture e.g shocked, scared, exhausted, in a panic etc....
Activity 4 & 5 - Write a diary entry for Wednesday 5th September. Remember to include the following;
a) Dates to start each entry
b) any 'I', 'my' and 'me' words.
c) any past tense verbs
d) any writing about feelings
e) any time words like 'after', 'when', 'today' or 'early in the morning'
Remember to use your sounds mat and common exception words to help you.
Activity 6 - Check that your work makes sense and make any changes. Identify all your common exception Words and illustrate your entry with a detailed picture.
Week Beginning 13th July 2020
Mixed Activities
Please find below a set of different English activities for you to choose from. These include 3 Reading Comprehensions and 12 Grammar tasks for you to pick from as you please to take you to the end of the Week.
Spellings for last 2 Weeks of Term.
Week Beginning 6.7.20 - Practise Summer term common exception words on the sheet attached below.
Week beginning 13.7.20 - Spelling check on all 45 common exception words. Please use the Common Exception Bookmarks attached below to check your child on the 45 Y1 Common Exception Words. I would suggest just to check 15 a day and then spend days 4&5 practising those that your child may be unsure of.
Topic work for the weeks beginning 6th July and 13th July
I can't believe we only have two weeks left of the term. I have been so proud of all the children and how they have all adapted during these most unusual times. It was great to see those of you who were on Zoom last week. I will be in school next week so I am posting all the work for the last two weeks.
Week beginning 6.7.20
For topic this week I would like the children to think of questions they might like to ask Samuel Pepys. There is a sheet below to record them on. I have also included a Fire fighters now and then sorting activity.
Week beginning 13.7.20
The activity for the final week is to design and make a house from the time of the Great Fire of London. There are some examples and templates below.
The usual RE and Computing activities are below too.
Finally I would like to thank you all for your continued support at home and for the fabulous job you have all done with the home schooling. It has been an absolute pleasure to have taught your children this year and I am just sorry I could not spend the whole year with them. However I am thrilled to bits to be teaching the children again in Year Two. I hope you all stay safe and enjoy the summer and I look forward to catching up with you all in September.
Best wishes,
Rachel Bagshaw.
Faith at Home: PATIENCE
Patience is one of those qualities that we all need to develop especially when times are tough, when people and governments are frustrating. Patience to wait for the right time, patience with each other and the patience to wait on God when things seem to be taking so long to sort themselves out. The Bible is filled with stories of people like Mary, David, Moses and Noah who had to wait for the right time, for God’s time.
‘…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience’ (Colossians 3:1)
Use this resource to watch the videos and talk about the pictures with your family. There are also short worship activities to do at home.
CHANGE TO ZOOM MEETING DETAILS
I have just arrived at school and apparently Year 1 will be Zooming with anyone who wishes to take part from home during the school day and not after school as I posted yesterday.
I will confirm the new details via email later today, with a view to Zooming sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Sorry for any confusion
Week Beginning 29th June 2020
Hello everyone,
I hope that your week has gone well and you were able to make the most of the sunshine while it lasted. I can't believe that we're only 3 weeks from the end of term!
I'm hoping to do a Zoom meeting this week for all the children who haven't been able to come into school since Lockdown. It'd be a lovely opportunity for those children to see their friends and it'd be great for me to catch up with them too. I'm hoping to set up the meeting for sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday. The school office will send an email out with further details and confirmation of how you can join the meeting. I think you may wish to set up a Zoom account on your computer or tablet (it's free of charge) to be able to use the programme.
As always, you'll find this week's work below and I hope you have a great week.
Looking forward to seeing you on Zoom!
Lots of love,
Suzanne Moore xx
Maths Work Week beginning 29.6.20
This week we will be revisiting our topic on Money.
By the end of Y1 we would hope that children are able to;
a) recognise all coins
b) recognise £5, £10 and £20 notes
c) understand that a 10p coin is equivalent to ten 1p coins and that £1 is equivalent to a
hundred 1p coins etc.....
d) be able to count coins (reinforcing counting in 2s, 5s and 10s)
NEW LEARNING
We will also be introducing the comparing signs < and >. We teach the meaning of these signs by referring to them as crocodiles' mouths. Crocodiles are always hungry and the open end of their mouth always wants to eat the biggest number. e.g. 7 < 10 as a crocodile would prefer to eat 10 people than 7 people! Or you could write it the other way round as 10 > 7.
I have attached the White Rose Maths planning unit on Money and a number of worksheets from Twinkl for you to use at your own discretion. I have also attached a sheet of coins for you to cut out as if you haven't got enough real coins to use they will help with counting. As always, using practical and visual resources will help your child better understand these concepts.
Finally, there are a number of Money activities on the Homework page on Education City if you wish to complete those.
English Work Week Beginning 29th June 2020
We are now ready to begin the second week of our diary focus. This is when we will become more familiar with what a diary entry needs to have, as well as practising skills to improve our writing.
Activity 1 - Read the Diary of Sally Potts and answer the questions
Activity 2 - Look again at the Writing a Diary Powerpoint and see if you can spot any features within the Diary of Sally Potts that are common to all diaries like;
a) Dates to start each entry
b) any 'I', 'my' and 'me' words.
c) any past tense verbs
d) any writing about feelings
e) any time words like 'after', 'when', 'today' or 'early in the morning'
Activity 3 - Handwriting
We will be recapping on the correct formation of capital letters (all must start from the top with no lead-ins) and alphabetical order. Use the worksheet below to copy out all capital letters from A to Z. Use this to help you write out all the days of the week with capital letters to start each day.
Activity 4 - Summer Common Exception words.
Complete the new wordsearch for the Summer words, then copy out each word you have found.
Optional Challenge 5 - Put all 15 common exception words in alphabetical order! Remember that if two words begin with the same letter, you have to look at the second letter to decide which one comes first. e.g. hat comes before hot because a comes before o, and home comes before house because m comes before u etc...
Spellings Week Beginning 29th June 2020
This week my group will be working on alternative ways of spelling the sound ee.
We will be looking at creating an ee sound by using the following graphemes;
1. ea as in beans and eat
2. y as in silly and very
3. e_e (we refer to this as e split e, or a split digraph) as in Steve and theme
4. ie as in field and chief
Mrs Moss's group will be focusing on different pronunciations for the graphemes ch and j.
1. tch making a ch sound as in match and pitch
2. ture making an ch sound as in picture and adventure
3. dge making a j sound as in badge and fudge
Please find below your child's spellings for this week.
Topic for week beginning 29.6.20
The topic work this week is an English applied task. I would like the children to write a fire poem. I have included an example poem below. I have included a senses planning sheet below so the children can plan ideas for their poem. Your child can decide how they present their poem. I've added some fire board paper and some acrostic poem templates below so your child can choose how to present their week. Also please don't feel you have to print loads of things out, it could be done on blank paper and decorated just as nicely. For a bit of fun, I've added a Great Fire word search.

Week Beginning 22nd June 2020
Hello everyone. Hope that your week has gone well and that you've had a good weekend. It was lovely to get to catch up on the phone with the children who're not in school at the moment and their parents. I appreciate how hard home-schooling must be and you're all doing a great job supporting your children. As I have said before, please don't worry if you don't complete everything that Mrs Bagshaw and I upload onto this page . As parents, you will know what is best for your children and there are going to be days when you may feel it is best to ease off a bit and concentrate on the children enjoying other things.
The weather looks as though it's going to be much kinder to us this week so that's something we can all look forward to.
As always, please feel free to contact myself or Mrs Bagshaw by email on stpcdeputy@icloud.com or stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com
I will be in school until Wednesday but Mrs Bagshaw will be available all week.
Have a great week!
Lots of love to everyone,

Maths Work Week Beginning 22nd June 2020
This week we are recapping on Addition & Subtraction to 20.
This follows on from work first introduced in the Spring term.
The children will be consolidating previous work on using the symbols + - and =
As with multiplication and division, it is important that the children have the opportunity to use concrete apparatus such as counters, and visual images such as number lines, 100 squares and drawings to support their calculations. The more visual the image, the better the children will understand the concept.
When adding we encourage the children to start with the larger number then count on from there.
We are also trying to encourage the children to use what they know to work out what they don't know. e.g. if they know that 3 + 3 = 6, they could use this to work out 3 + 4 by just adding 1 more.
At the start of each lesson, it would be helpful if they practised the following on Hit the Button;
a) Make 10
b) Addition to 10
c) Doubles to 10 + 10
We are looking for the children to get a minimum of 20 (with none incorrect!)
I have attached the Focus Maths planning, a number line to 20 and a 100 square to support their learning.
I have also uploaded some addition and subtraction activities on Education City. Although these have been done before, they are good practice.
English Work Week Beginning 22nd June 2020
This week we continue with our theme of the Great Fire of London but with a new English focus - Writing a Diary.
The text we will be using is the Diary of Samuel Pepys, a 17th Century statesman who recorded the events of the Great Fire in his diary.
Activity 1 - Watch and discuss the Powerpoint of Samuel Pepys which tells you a little bit about his life.
Activity 2 - Watch the youtube clip of 'Magic Grandad' which is about 2 children who go back in time to meet Samuel Pepys and this will help the children learn a little more about him and see what it was like to be in London at the time of the fire.
Activity 3 - Reading Comprehension. I would suggest choosing the 2nd text, but you can judge whether this is appropriate or not.
Activity 4 - Watch the Powerpoint on Writing a Diary. Read the 2nd comprehension text and see if you can spot;
a) any 'I', 'my' and 'me' words.
b) any past tense verbs
c) where Samuel Pepys writes about his feelings
d) any time words like 'after', 'when', 'today' or 'early in the morning'
Activity 5 (optional) - Reading Comprehension 'Stop Telling Fibs!'
Spellings Week Beginning 22nd June 2020
This week my group will be working on alternative ways of spelling the sound ai.
We will be looking at creating an ai sound by using the following graphemes;
1. ai as in train and rain
2. ay as in play and crayon
3. a_e (we refer to this as a split e, or a split digraph) as in plate and made
Mrs Moss's group will be focusing on different pronunciations for the graphemes e and ey.
1. e making an e sound as in best and mend
2. e making an ee sound as in me and we
3. ey making an ay sound as in they and grey
4. ey making an ee sound as in money and donkey
Please find below your child's spellings for this week.
TOPIC WEEK BEGINNING 22ND JUNE 2020
We are looking this week at why the Great Fire spread. I have included an information sheet below for your child to read about why the fire spread. Then there is an activity to complete about why the fire spread. I thought to complement this work it would be nice for the children to create some Great Fire of London pictures. I have included examples below of pictures where you first colour the background in fire colours, this can be paint, crayon or whatever you have in the house. Then using black paper or even card coloured black, you can add the silhouettes of the burning buildings. Please feel free to adapt this idea if you wish.

Week Beginning Monday 15th June 2020
Hi everyone! Hope the week has gone well? Some of the Year 1 children have been back in school with me this week and getting used to the new systems in place. It has all been a little strange but we have got to Friday relatively unscathed!
For all of you still working at home, I hope everyone has had a good week. Mrs Bagshaw and I are hoping to catch up on the phone with the children - and yourselves of course - sometime over the next week or so which we're really looking forward to.
Mrs Lees has also uploaded some materials below, under the heading 'Faith at Home' to enable the children working from home to access resources to support their life as part of a christian school community. With being unable to worship and come together as a whole school they provide the opportunity for the children to reflect and talk about things that may help them through these strange times. I am really looking forward to using them in school too. Each week a new session will be uploaded, which covers a different topic. We hope you find them helpful.
From this week, I will be in school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays so if you have any issues or concerns, I will not be able to reply to emails until the end of the school day. Alternatively, you can contact Mrs Bagshaw who will be happy to help.
My email address is stpcdeputy@icloud.com and Mrs Bagshaw's is stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com.

Maths Work Week Beginning 15th June 2020
This week we are recapping on Multiplication & Division.
This follows on from work first introduced in March, where we referred to multiplication as 'lots of' and to division as 'shared between'.
The children were also introduced to the multiplication symbol 'x' and the division symbol '÷'.
When doing multiplication or division, it is important that the children have the opportunity to use concrete apparatus such as counters to physically create equal groups of a number, or to physically share a number into equal groups.
We would also encourage the children to use drawings to create images of multiplication or division. The more visual the image, the better the children will understand the concept. At this stage we would not expect children to carry out multiplication or division calculations in their heads.
One key concept is that the groups must be equal e.g. 4 x 2 is 4 lots of 2, and that multiplication is the same as repeated addition.
e.g 3 x 5 means 5 + 5 + 5.
If the children are confident counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, this is enormously helpful.
It would be a good idea to start each lesson with counting in;
a) 2s to 20 and back
b) 5s to 50 and back
c) 10s to 100 and back
I have attached the Focus Maths Planning and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s numberlines below.
I have also set some Education City activities to support this week's work.
English Work Week Beginning 15th June 2020
It is the final week of our Recount unit and we will be producing a final piece of writing, which will be a recount of the story of Grace Darling.
Activity 1 - Watch the powerpoint 'The Story of Grace Darling'. Discuss the meaning of any words that your child may not be familiar with. Ask your child to take the hotseat as Grace Darling and ask some questions e.g.
Activity 2 - Use the headings on the Powerpoint pages to help you draw a storyboard (pictures to show what happened in sequence). You will find the storyboard attached below. Use the storyboard to retell the story to your mum or dad.
Activity 3 - Write a recount of the life of Grace Darling,using the pictures on your storyboard to help you sequence the events. Remember to include the following criteria;
Activity 4 - Read your story through to check that it makes sense and to check for spelling errors (including the common exception words). Draw a picture to illustrate your story.
Optional Activities
1. Complete the reading comprehension attached below, entitled 'The Zoo Vet'. There is one reading text for all but differentiated answer sheets so please choose the one you feel is most appropriate for your child.
2. Colour in one of the lighthouse pictures attached below
Spellings Week Beginning 15th June 2020
This week my group will be working on alternative ways of spelling the sound u.
We will be looking at creating an u sound by using the following graphemes;
1. u as in full and put
2. oo, as in good and foot
3. oul, as in would and could
Mrs Moss's group will be focusing on different pronunciations for the grapheme ou.
1. ou making an ow sound as in mouse and found
2. ou making an oo sound as in soup and group
3. ou making an u sound as in would and could
Please find below your child's spellings for this week.
Topic
The topic activities this week have a historical focus. First your child can use the sequence cards below to understand the main events of the Great Fire on London. Then the first activity asks your child to sequence the events of the Great Fire in the correct order. The second activity requires your child to put the events of the Great Fire in order on a timeline. The final activity requires your child to find London on a map and to use the map below to get a better understanding of where in London the fire actually started.

Week Beginning 8th June 2020
Hi everyone! I hope you have all had a good week, even though the recent rain has been a bit of a shock after all that lovely sunshine!
From the emails I've received, it looks as though everyone has been enjoying their work on The Great Fire of London! It was lovely to hear how the shape work and materials work had gone too.
With nine of the class returning to school later in the week, I just wanted to reassure those parents whose children will still be at home, that the work being done by the children in school will be exactly the same as the work being posted on the class page, so all children will be having the same learning opportunities in English, Maths and Topic.
I also wanted to inform you of a change to my hours. Instead of working five mornings a week, I will now be working three full days a week until the end of term. This week those three days will be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday but from next week (beginning 15th June until the end of term) they will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On the days that I am in school I may not always be able to respond immediately to any emails you send until the end of the school day, but if a matter is urgent Mrs Bagshaw will be available should you have any concerns or wish to contact her or send photos of your children's work. Her contact email is stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com
Please feel free to contact me on my email stpcdeputy@icloud.com on my days off if you have any concerns or questions or would like me to give you a call to discuss things.
Stay safe everyone,

Maths Work Week Beginning 8th June 2020
This week we will be revisiting the topic of Time, in particular telling the time to o'clock and half past, as well as recording o'clocks and half pasts on a clock face.
NB In Y1 we only ever use an analogue clock (with hands) and not a digital one as it is vital that children can read times on a clock face before they tackle digital clocks!
The key thing with time is to encourage the children to always place the long hand -which we refer to as the minute hand - on the clock before the short (or hour) hand.
As you are unlikely to have a toy clock which the children can use to show the time, an ideal start would be for the children to make their own!
This is easier than it sounds! (see activity 1).
The suggested activities are below and I have put some o'clock and half past activities onto Education City. They may have done some of the Education City activities before but they are good for consolidation.
Activity 1 - Make your own clock and use it to practise showing o'clock and half past times.
1. Take a piece of card or paper (A4 or A5 would be fine) and cut out a circle.
2. Mark off the 12 and 6 first, then the 3 and 9, then the other numbers.
3. Make 2 hands each with an arrowhead, using strips of paper. The long one should go from the centre to the edge of the clock and the small one just to the start of the numbers.
4. Colour each hand a different colour.
5. Practise reading and showing o'clock and half past times remembering always to place or look at the long hand first. When it is on the 12 it is something o'clock and when it is on the 6 it is always half past something. Then look at the little hand to see which o'clock or half past it is.
Activity 2 - My Day Timeline (o'clock only)
Look at the timeline (attached below) and draw a picture for what you may be doing at each of the times on the sheet. Use your homemade clock to show each time and draw the hands on the blank clock faces on the timeline to show the time.
Activity 3, 4 & 5
Use the Focus Maths planning to practise telling and recording the time on a clock face to the nearest hour, then move onto the half hour. Practise saying what comes one hour before or one hour after a given time.
I have also attached some sheets below for practice.
English Work Week Beginning 8th June 2020
As part of this second week of our recount unit, based on the Great Fire of London text, we will be focusing on several key writing objectives. These will include learning all about;
a) singular and plural nouns
b) adding s or es to singular nouns to make them plural e.g. one bucket, two buckets, or one church, two churches.
c) Adding s or es to a verb when it is in the 3rd person (he or she) e.g. I stand, she stands, I dash, he dashes.
Activity 1 - Singular and Plural
a) Watch the First Powerpoint attached below to help your child to understand what plural and singular means. It also explains how you know whether to add s or es to a singular noun when it becomes plural.
b) Complete the 3 Education City Activities on your Homework page
c) Read the Great Fire of London again to see if you can spot any singular or plural nouns. You can just do this by discussion.
Activity 2 - Singular and Plural
c) Watch the first Powerpoint again. Design a poster to explain what singular and plural mean (don't forget to include pictures and make it colourful).
Activity 3
a) Watch Powerpoint 2, this time focusing on the rule for adding s or es to make a singular noun plural.
c) Complete the 'Activity 3' sheet labelled 's or es?', sorting each word into an 's' or 'es' pile. Remember to use the rule to help you. Choose 1 word with 's' and 1 word with 'es' and put each into a sentence and record the 2 sentences in your book.
Activity 4
a) Teach that the same rule also applies to adding s or es to a verb when it changes from the first person (I) to the 3rd person (he or she). e.g I see, he sees, I splash, she splashes. Change the sentences on Activity Sheet 4 from the first to the 3rd person, making sure that you follow the rule for adding s or es.
Spelling Lists Week beginning 8th June 2020
This week my group will be working on alternative ways of spelling the sound or.
We will be looking at creating an or sound by using the following 4 graphemes;
1. a as in wall and tall
2. al, as in talk and walk
3. our as in four and pour
4. augh as in caught and taught
Mrs Moss's group will be focusing on different pronunciations for the letter y.
1. y making an igh sound as in try and cry
2. y making an ee sound as in happy and mummy
3. y making an i sound as in gym and pyramid
Please find below your child's spellings for this week.
Topic
For topic we continue with a second week on materials. The activities below will encourage your child to explore the properties of materials (hard, soft, bendy, rigid etc) as well as an activity that looks at the suitability of materials for everyday uses or jobs.
Computing
I have included a link below to the Think U Know KS1 website. It has 6 home activity packs related to E-Safety which I thought your child could work through over the next 6 weeks. E-safety is a vital part of the Computing curriculum and it is so important that your child is safe when they are online.
Have a great week and do not hesitant to message me on stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com if you have any questions or concerns.
Lots of love to you all,

Week Beginning 1st June 2020
Hi everyone! I hope you have all enjoyed your half term break and have been able to enjoy some of the lovely sunshine.
Well, we're now entering the final half term of this year and it's hard to believe that our Year 1 children will be moving up to Top Infants so soon. It doesn't seem a minute since they came up from F2.
I have really enjoyed seeing your work and photos over the last few weeks and it was lovely to hear how everyone had gone on with our alternative Lockdown Sports Day. We were very blessed to have such a beautiful day for it.
As always, please feel free to contact me on my email stpcdeputy@icloud.com if you have any concerns or questions or would like me to give you a call to discuss things.
Wishing you all a good week, whatever you are doing and hope you enjoy the work Mrs Bagshaw and I have set you below.
Take care everyone,
Lots of Love from

Maths Work Week Beginning 1st June 2020
It's Shape Week!
This week we will be consolidating and reinforcing work done so far on 2D shapes and introducing 3D shapes.
In Year 1 there are particular 2D and 3D shapes that we would expect the children to recognise and to name.
These are the following
2D Shapes - circle, triangle, square & rectangle
3D Shapes - sphere, cube, cuboid, cone, cylinder & pyramid
We also need the children to be able to identify the properties (particular features) of the above shapes and use specific language to describe each shape.
2D Shapes
When describing properties of 2D shapes, we would use the terms;
1. sides (straight & curved)
2. vertices (corners)
3D shapes
When describing properties of 3D shapes, we would use the terms;
1. faces - flat & curved
2. edges - straight & curved (these run along the outside of each face)
3. vertices ( or corners). The singular of vertices is vertex.
NB We don't use the word sides to describe 3D shapes at all.
Not only do children need to be able to identify and name the above shapes, they also need to be able to sort them into different groups according to their properties.
I have uploaded a range of Education City activities onto the website and have attached below the Focus Plans and White Rose Plans to give you ideas of the kind of activities you can do with the children in order to help them develop their understanding of 2D & 3D shape. Again, it is a topic that really lends itself to discussion and practical activities so there doesn't need to be a lot of -if any - written work done.
I have made a pairs game (attached below) for 3D shapes which the children will know how to play (it needs printing off and cutting up first!) which is a great way to help with shape recognition.
The nets are there just in case you would like to create your own 3D shape and decorate it (before you fold it!) and hang it up somewhere on display.
A 2D and 3D shape treasure hunt is great fun - set the children the challenge of searching for something in the house, garden or on a walk that is each of the 2D and 3D shapes listed above.
You could even create your own robot model using recycled materials that incorporates a selection of the 2D 3D shapes above. The possibilities are endless!
As long as the children have fun and are learning, feel free to follow their lead on this one.
Enjoy!
English Work Week Beginning 1st June
This week we will be starting our new unit of work on recounts. For this, we will be focussing on a recount of the Great Fire of London, which is the topic we are covering in the next few weeks.
This coming week is our Reading Week so all our activities will be linked to developing our reading skills.
Activity 1 - Introducing our Text
Read the recount attached below. Use this recount to answer the comprehension questions also attached on a sheet. This can just be done through discussion.
Activities 2 & 3 - Identifying and Sequencing Key Events in a Text.
Re-read the recount from yesterday then use the sequencing cards to order the key events in the text. When you have done this, draw a picture to match each event. You may need to research what the clothes and houses were like in 1666.
Activity 4 - Hot-Seating
Imagine you could go back in time and speak to the people who were there (the baker or an adult or child living in London). Think about what questions you may like to ask them? What might they say?You or your mum or dad could be one of the characters in the hot-seat and the other can ask the questions.
Activity 5 - Summer Common Exception Words Wordsearch
Complete the Wordsearch attached below to find the 15 Summer Common Exception words. Can you spot any in our recount?
Spellings for Week Beginning 1.6.20
This week my group will be working on alternative ways to spell the sound air.
We will be looking at creating an air sound by using the following 3 graphemes;
1. ere as in where and there
2. are, as in share and care
3. ear as in pear and bear
Mrs Moss's group will be focusing on different pronunciations for the letter a.
1. a making an ay sound as in acorn and angel
2. a making an ar sound as in father and rather
Please find below your child's spellings for this week.
Topic work for the week beginning 1.6.20
I hope you have all enjoyed the half term break and have made the most of this fantastic weather. It was lovely to catch up with everyone before half term and I am so pleased that everyone is safe and well. We are moving into the last half term of Y1 with the topic of The Great Fire of London.
Topic
The new topic is The Great Fire of London, this is mainly a history topic but starts off with a science focus on materials. I have including a presentation to explain to your child what a material is and it shows a range of materials. The topic activities this week start with materials hunts. Then there is a grouping materials activity and a describing materials activity. To support this, your child could make collections of different objects that are plastic, wood, fabric etc.
I hope you all have a great week learning about different types of materials. Any questions or concerns please contact me via the stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com email.
Lots of love,
Mrs Bagshaw x
Work for Week Beginning 18th May 2020
It's our final week of this half term, which will see the end of our English unit of work on Instructions as well as our stay-at-home version of Sports' Day on Friday.
Sports Day
Mr Wassell (head of PE) has devised some Sports' Day activities which can be done at home, and will be uploading some video clips and information onto the school website over the course of this week. Please watch them so the children know exactly what to do and keep practising so they are fully fit and ready to carry out the events on Friday!! There will also be a score sheet! With the weather set fair, we hope it'll be a big hit with the children.
Year 1 have 6 events:
1. Egg and Spoon (hard boiled egg, potato or suitably shaped stone)
2. Dressing-up Race (hat, gloves, scarf, coat)
3. Star Jumps in 1 Minute
4. Throw and Catch in 1 Minute with mum or dad
5. Paper Plane Javelin
6. Design your own Obstacle Course (optional)
I've uploaded some Sports' Day Certificates below as well as some Sports' Day colouring sheets.
Mrs Bagshaw will also be hoping to contact you by telephone over the course of the coming week just to have a catch-up with yourselves and the children and see how things are going. As always, please feel free to drop me an email any time if you have any concerns or would like me to give you a call. I am always very happy to hear from you and if you'd like to send photos of your children's work, I can post it onto our class page.
My email address is stpcdeputy@icloud.com
Please find below the children's work for this week.
Love to everyone,
Suzanne Moore xx
Maths Work Week beginning 18th May 2020
This week's focus is on Position & Direction.
This consolidates previous work on fractions and involves the children being able to understand direction - forwards, backwards, a full turn, half a turn, a quarter turn and a three quarter turn. They need to understand that 2 half turns make a full turn, that 4 quarter turns make a full turn and that 2 quarter turns make half a turn. Through lots of practical activity, we would hope that the children also become confident in knowing their left and right. The terms clockwise and anti-clockwise can be used too.
Along with work on direction, positional language such as above, below, under, in front of, behind etc... can be used.
This is a unit where mathematical vocabulary and language are really important so I would suggest that the more discussion you have with your child, the better they will understand.
It isn't necessary to record anything on paper unless you wish to do so, as the children will learn better through practical activities and discussion.
One nice idea is to create a path in your garden with obstacles in the way. Ask your child to give you instructions to direct you through it, using the correct terminiology. You can then then create a path for your child to follow, following your instructions.
They could also create a real life 4x4 grid in the garden or on paper with different objects in each square and play a game like, "What object is 2 squares below the teddy bear?" etc...
I've uploaded a couple of Education City activities and attached the Focus Maths planning that accompanies this unit but as always, feel free to supplement/replace any activities with ideas form elsewhere.
English Work for Week Beginning 18th May 2020
This week we are going to write a set of our own instructions, telling someone how to take part in an Egg & Spoon race.
Activity 1 - Get everything you will need for an egg and spoon race. In your book or on paper, draw a detailed picture of each thing and label them.
Activity 2 - Take the things you need and go outside with your mum or dad and any brothers and sisters who may want to take part. Put the things you need on the ground next to you. Your job is to give everyone the right instructions to take part in an Egg & Spoon race. Remember that your instructions have to start with a bossy word and be very clear. The runners in the race are not allowed to do anything unless you tell them to!
Activity 3 - Talk over with your mum or dad the instructions that you gave yesterday to the runners. Write each instruction down remembering to;
a) Put a number at the start of each sentence.
b) Start each sentence with a bossy word.
c) Put your sentences in order.
d) Put capital letters and full stops in the right place.
e) Start all your letters on the line.
f) Use lead-ins
g) Make your letters the right size
h) Make all capital letters tall
i) See if you can spot any common exception words
Finally, draw a picture of an egg and spoon race, remembering to put in a detailed background.
OPTIONAL
If you finish all of this, and would like to, I have attached below a Book Review where you can write about one of your favourite books.
Spellings for Week Beginning 18.5.20
This week my group will be working on alternative ways to spell the sounds ar and ur.
We will be looking at creating an ar sound by using just an a, as in father and rather, or an al, as in calm and half.
We will also be looking at how to create an ur sound by using the graphemes or, as in worm and work and ear, as in earth and learn
Mrs Moss's group will be focusing on alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes er and ch.
So far we have pronounced ch in works like chin and chat, but we need to see that sometimes ch can make a sh sound, as in chef, or a k sound as in school or character.
We also need to see that er can come in the middle or at the end of a word, like stern, or better,
Please find below your child's spellings for this week.
Work for the week beginning 18/5/20
I hope you are all well. It has been amazing to see all the fantastic work from last week and the children's smiley faces. I am so proud of all the children and their positive attitudes to home schooling. It was great to catch up with all those of you who I spoke to on the telephone, I will be contacting the rest of you by telephone early this week. Friday would have been Sports Day so Mr Wassell has devised a Virtual Sports Day, see the events below.
Topic
The focus for this week is the weather. I have included a PowerPoint below which asks your child to think back to the weather chart they completed at the beginning of the Enchanted Wood Summer Term topic. Then for the main task, the PowerPoint asks your child to devise a weather forecast for a place of their choice. It is totally up to you how you wish to do your forecast, it could be a drawn or printed map with the weather symbols written on or your child may wish to video record themselves doing a weather forecast. I have included a Uk and World map below to support this task.
PE
Finally Friday would have been sports day. The list of sports day activities is below so you can all take part at home. There will be video examples put on the school website throughout the week so you can start practising each day. A record sheet will be posted too so your scores can be recorded. I have included some colouring sheets below and certificates so you can prepare for the big day.
Virtual sports day races
1. Egg and spoon (hard boiled egg, potato or suitably shaped stone)
2. Dressing up race (hat, gloves, scarf, coat)
3. Star jumps in 1 minute.
4. Throw and catch in 1 minute with mum or dad
5. Paper plane javelin
6. Design your own obstacle course (optional)
Have a great week and I look forward to catching up with those of you I haven't spoken to by phone on Monday or Tuesday. Please contact my by email stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com in the meantime if you have any concerns.
Have a good week, lots of love.
Mrs Bagshaw x
Maths Work Week Beginning 11th May 2020
Our Focus this week is a revision unit on fractions, namely recognising how to find a half and a quarter of a shape, a set of objects or a number.
Key concepts that we need children to understand
a) a fraction is an equal part of a whole one
b) When we split something into 2 equal parts, each part is called a half.
c) 2 halves make a whole one
d) When we split something into 4 equal parts, each part is called a quarter.
e) 4 quarters make a whole one
f) 2 quarters is the same as a half
For young children fractions can be a very abstract concept so the more we can link it to concrete, practical and visual images, the better.
While we have used the terms a half and a quarter, we have not yet introduced the numeric representations of fractions - 1/2 & 1/4 so please bear this in mind as it will be new to many of the children.
I have downloaded six activities from Education City that will help your children to better understand these concepts.
I have downloaded below the White Rose Maths Plans that you may find useful, along with a set of activities related to the unit. I have included some challenges if your child wants to have ago, but as usual I would suggest that you choose which things to use and which to leave according to how the week goes.
PLEASE NOTE Whenever the children are asked to find a half or a quarter of a set of objects, the best way is to use concrete apparatus (buttons, coins, lego pieces etc...) and to split them into 2 equal groups or 4 equal groups.
English Work for Week Beginning 11th May 2020
We are now ready to start our new 2-week non-fiction unit on Reading and Writing Instructions. This week we will be concentrating on reading a recipe for gingerbread, as well as comprehension and grammar activities. In grammar the focus will be on
a) reading and writing compound words which are words made by joining 2 other words to make one new word e.g. hose & pipe = hosepipe etc....
b) the prefix -un. This is added to the start of a word to change its meaning to the opposite of what it meant before, e.g happy & unhappy.
Below you will find the recipe along with a reading comprehension, powerpoints and several activities to support the two grammar objectives. As always, please feel free to dip in and out of these resources, using whichever you feel are most helpful.
Spelling Lists for Week Beginning 11th May
This week my group will be working on alternative ways to spell the sounds i and ear. We will be looking at putting a y or ey at the end of a word as well as making the ear sound by using the graphemes ere and eer instead.
The last 4 words in the list are common words that are used a lot in writing.
Mrs Moss's group will be focusing on alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes ie and ea.
So far we have pronounced ie like igh in words like pie and cried but this week we will be looking at how ie can also make an ee sound as in field.
Up until now we have sounded ea like ee in words like bean and dream but this week we will be looking at how ea can also make a short e sound as in bread.
TOPIC WORK FOR WEEK BEGINNING 11/5/20
I hope you all enjoyed the VE Day celebrations, it was great to see all the work from the children this week. Please find below the topic work for the week ahead.
Topic
The focus this week is the four seasons. I would like the children to think about the weather, plants and length of day associated with each season. I have included fact cards below for the seasons and a season sorting activity. Finally the main task for the children is to design a poster showing each of the seasons and the weather, plants/trees and length of day for each. This can be done in any way and you could use the sorting activity pictures if you like as part of the poster.
Computing
The computing task this week is to send an email with help. Therefore I thought the children could send me an email either sending work or just a short message. These messages can be sent to stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com and I'll reply to all.
Have a good week, stay safe and love to you all.
Mrs Bagshaw x
VE THEME DAY 7/5/20
As you are aware, there is a special day this week, VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), which is on May 8th. As a school we are going to be celebrating this by having a themed day on the 7/5/2020. On this day I would like your child to complete special activities below, some of them we will be doing as a whole school and I would love you to send me some pictures of what you get up to. We would like everyone to create their own Union Jack Flag and put it up in their window, to celebrate and say thank you to all those soldiers, who lost their lives during the war.
There is a Powerpoint for you to read through with your child to explain the importance of VE day to begin the theme day. Then the activities for the theme day are to create a flag, design a medal (this can be made practically as well as completing the worksheet), complete a reading comprehension, order the events leading up to VE Day to make a timeline (you may just want to pick key events rather than using all the timeline cards) and finally make a Spitfire glider.
Have fun and enjoy this very special celebration. Mrs Bagshaw xx
Maths Work for Week Beginning 4th May 2020
You may need your waterproofs for this one! It's Capacity and Volume week!
The good news is that it's great fun, with lots of practical activities to help the children understand the concept of how big a litre is.
There are 3 main things that the children will begin to understand.
a) Capacity means how much liquid a container can hold when it is full.
b) Volume means how much liquid there is in a container.
c) How much a litre is and to say whether something holds more or less than a litre.
We will also be encouraging the children to understand the word 'estimate'. We have used it in class before, and refer to it as meaning a clever guess which you have to think carefully about.
I have uploaded a couple of activities onto the Education City Homework page for the children to have a go at though they can't beat the kinds of 'hands-on' activities given as examples in the Focus Maths Planning which I have attached below.
There is no need to record anything on paper - just have fun!
Spellings for Week Beginning 4th May 2020
My group is focusing on different ways to record the sounds -s, -z and -u. We will be looking at words that use st to make a s sound as in listen, s to make a z sound as in noise, and o to make an u sound as in mother.
Mrs Moss's group are focusing on different ways of pronouncing -u and -ow. We will be looking at words that use u to make a yoo sound as in music, and ow to make an oa sound as in slow and grow.
I have attached both sets of spellings below
English Work Week Beginning 4th May 2020
We are now in the last week of our Traditional Tales unit. This means that we are ready to plan and write our own traditional tale. As it is only a 4-day week, with Friday being a Bank Holiday, I have split the work up as follows:
Days 1 & 2 Planning the story and telling it orally.
Days 3 & 4 Writing and checking the story.
The file attached below explains how the children can develop their plan and create their own story.
TOPIC FOR WEEK BEGINNING 4/5/20
I have just set one topic task this week as you may want to use any other time to complete some of the VE Day work. The topic task this week is to create a tree collage. Please only use things you have around the house and drawings will be fine if you are short on craft materials. I have included some example tree collages in the document below.
I hope you all have a good week. It was been wonderful to see all the work you have completed this week.
Stay safe and lots of love to you all, Mrs Bagshaw x
Week Beginning 27th April 2020
Well, I can't believe we're into week 4 of our learning from home programme. I hope everyone is keeping well and staying safe. I have had a number of communications with parents this week, which has been lovely. I hope that the work that myself and Mrs Bagshaw have set on this class page is helpful and helps to structure the week, but please feel free to dip in and out of other resources as every child is different and may respond to a wider range of activities available.
Please find below the work set for this week.
Have a great week,
Love to everyone,
Suzanne Moore x
Maths Work for Week Beginning 27th April 2020
The topic for this week is on Addition and Subtraction to 20. At this stage of learning we would expect children to use concrete apparatus (e.g. counters) or visual aids (e.g.number lines or 100 squares) to support their calculations. Some children like to draw dots to represent numbers when they are adding or subtracting. Whatever helps them best is fine.
I have added 7 activities onto Education City (on the Homework page) for the children to complete. The last 2 are missing number activities which can be quite tricky so they may need a bit of extra support if they want to tackle those. If not, it's fine to leave them. I have uploaded new number lines to 20 and 100s squares below.
I have also uploaded below the Focus Maths Planning document which shows the kind of activities that your child can do to support their understanding in this area.
Spellings for the week beginning 27th April
My group is focusing on different ways to record the sounds -r, -n and -m. These spellings include what we sometimes call silent letters. e.g gnat, and sign have a silent g, wrap and wrong have a silent w, knit and know have a silent k and lamb and thumb have a silent b.
Mrs Moss's group are focusing on different ways of pronouncing -c and -g. Instead of sounding c as a hard sound as in cat and cot, it can also be pronounced as a soft sound (or an s) as in city and ice. The same applies to g. We try to encourage the children to see that when a c is followed by an a, o or u it usually makes a hard sound as in cat, cot or cut, but when it is followed by an e or an i, it usually makes a soft sound as in cent, or cinema.
English Activities for Week Beginning 27th April 2020
This week we will be focussing on the alphabet and capital letters.
The alphabet
This will involve children being able to recite the alphabet in order using the correct names for each letter, as well as putting words in alphabetical order by looking to see which letter they start with.
Capital letters
This will involve children knowing when to use a capital letter - at the start of a sentence as well as for names of people, places and days of the week etc... We will also be working on writing capital letters correctly.
Day 1 - Sing the alphabet song (link below). Make a poster - as colourful as you like - of all 26 letters in the right order.
Day 2 - Sing the alphabet song again and then recite the alphabet to your mum or dad, using all the correct letter names. You can use your poster to help you.
When you have done this, read the story of Hansel and Gretel again. On the alphabetical order sheet attached below I have chosen sets of words from the story for you to put in alphabetical order. I have done an example to help you. See if you can finish the others. You have to always look at the first letter of each word to choose which one comes first. You can just talk about it, you don't have to write anything down.
Day 3 - Practising writing capital letters. Look at the Capital Letters Formation Practice Sheet. Use this to help you write out the 26 letters of the alphabet in capitals. Remember these 4 things;
a) Capital letters always start at the top.
b) They are always tall.
c) They always rest on the line.
d) They never have lead-ins or join to other letters.
Day 4 - Read the Hansel and Gretel story and discuss where capital letters have been used.
a) Read the story on the sheet 'Capital Letters for Names of People, Places and
Days of the Week'.
b) Copy down in your book each word in the story that begins with a capital
letter.
c) Sort each word into a group according to whether it is the name of a person, a
place or a day of the week or is just at the start of a sentence. You could write
this on the sheet, in your book or just talk about it.
d) Write a sentence that has the name of a person, a place and a day of the
week in it. Make sure you start all of these with a capital letter, as well s
starting the sentence with a capital letter
Day 5 - a) Spelling Test
b) Alphabet Hunt - go around your house or garden (or you can do this in your
daily exercise time if you prefer) with your alphabet poster. See if you can
find something that begins with each letter - but you have to start with a and
end with z! Good luck!
Work for the week beginning 27.4.20
Topic
The focus continues on trees. I have attached below a sorting activities for evergreen (trees that keep their leaves) and deciduous (trees that lose their leaves). There is an answer sheet!!!! You could extend this activity by grouping the trees in a different way.
Computing
The new unit focuses on emailing. The task for this week is to design a poster to show all the different ways of sending messages, traditional (letter, card) and electronic (email, blog, video message). I have included a web link below to show ways of electronic messaging. Please email pictures of these posters and I will be able to put them in the Y1 Computing class work booklet.
I hope you are all well and can’t wait to catch up with you all. If you have any questions for concerns at all please contact me on the stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com email.
Stay safe and lots of love to you all,
Mrs Bagshaw x

Maths Work for Week Beginning 20th April 2020
The topic for this week is on Number and Place Value - Reading and Writing Numbers to 20.
I have added 7 activities onto Education City (on the Homework page) for the children to complete.
I have also uploaded below the Focus Maths Planning document which shows the kind of activities that your child can do to support their understanding in this area.
Spellings for the week beginning 20th April
My group is focusing on different ways to record the sounds -ch and -j. The main alternative grapheme for -ch is -tch while the main alternative for -j is -dge.
Mrs Moss's group are focusing on different ways of pronouncing -i and -o. Instead of sounding them as short vowels as in pit and pot, they can also be pronounced as a long vowels as in find and both.
English Planning Week Beginning 20th April 2020
We are ready to begin our new 3-week unit of work! Our focus text is the traditional tale of Hansel & Gretel. This week we will concentrate on reading the text to familiarise ourselves with the story along with completing some activities to develop our Reading skills.
I've attached the story below as a PDF so the children can enjoy the pictures as well as the text.
English Activities for Week Beginning 20th April 2020
Day 1 - Read the story above of Hansel and Gretel. Choose your favourite part of the
story and draw a picture of it. Write a sentence to say what is happening in your
picture.
Day 2 - Hotseating! Read the story again then ask your mum or dad to sit on a chair and
pretend to be one of the characters. Think of some questions you would like to ask
that character. Your questions could begin with who, what, why, when or where.
When you have done that, swap places and do the same thing with a different
character. If you have time, do the same for the other characters.
Day 3 - Choose one of the characters from the story and write 2 or 3 sentences about
them. You can use the adjectives on the character sheets below to help you.
Day 4 - Complete the Reading Comprehension sheets below (your mum or dad can choose
which one they think is best for you to do).
Day 5 - a) Spelling Test
b) Handwriting practice - write out a section of the story in your best handwriting.
Remember to start all letters on the line with lead-in strokes. (remember no
lead-ins for capital letters!) making your tall letters tall (b, d, h, k, l and t), and
the letters f, g, j, p, q, y going below the line).
Topic Activities for Week Beginning 20th April
I hope you are all well and have all enjoyed the sunshine over the Easter holidays.
For Topic this half term we return to the Enchanted Wood topic and focus mainly on trees and the weather.
The first task is to use the tree identification sheets below to identify the trees in your garden or on your daily walk. Reflect back to the Autumn term and think about how the trees have changed.
The second task is to complete the weekly weather chart below. Again reflect back to the Autumn term and think about how the weather have changed.
Finally I have included a Computing pack which is related to E-Safety.
I can't wait to hear about all your adventures and am missing you all.
Lots of love,
Mrs Bagshaw x Email contact stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com
Week beginning 30th March 2020
Week 2 of our Home Learning Programme.
Hello Selah class! I'm really missing seeing you all and think about you every day. I'll be in school all week so one or two of you might see me but I'll be posting some home learning activities for you on this page and hope you enjoy them. I'll also be joining in with Joe Wick's PE lessons and listening to the David Walliams story everyday too.
I've really enjoyed hearing from your mums and dads about how you are doing and how many exciting things you've been up to. If you want everyone to see what you've been doing just ask your parents to email me a photo and I can post it on this class page.
Anyway, I hope you have a great week!
Lots of love from Mrs Moore xx
Maths Work Week Beginning 30th March 2020
Our focus this week is on Time. There are many elements to this topic and last term we covered days of the week and months of the year and their related vocabulary e.g. today, yesterday, tomorrow, and before and after. This week the focus is on recapping this prior learning and understanding units of time e.g. seconds, minutes, hours. I have uploaded a number of activities onto the Education City website and have attached below the White Rose Planning for Time which is pretty comprehensive and gives lots of great questions to ask. Most of this work is best done orally with your child. Ideally, we would like the children to be able to recognise o'clock and half past on an analogue clock by the end of this unit.
Spellings Week Beginning 30th March 2020
Please find below the spellings for this week.
Mrs Moss's group is focusing on 3 new split digraphs i-e, o-e and u-e.
Children need to see that u-e can be pronounced oo (as in flute) or yoo (as in cube).
My group will be focusing on the different pronunciations of 'e' as in step or me as well as the two ways of pronouncing 'ey' as in monkey or grey.
English Activities Week beginning 30th March 2020
This would generally be our planning, writing and editing week as it is the final week of our unit on narrative poetry.
Writing rhyming poetry is one of the hardest things for children to do and at this age we wouldn't expect them to do it without support. So I'm going to write a list of activities that you could use to help your child to produce a piece of writing (a story) inspired by The Owl & the Pussycat Poem.
Activity 1. Go for a walk and listen and look for and talk about the animals that might be living around you - those that you might see or hear, or those that may be living in the houses, hedgerows or fields nearby etc...
Activity 2. Choose 2 animals from your walk (or just 2 of your favourite animals if you prefer) and draw and label a picture of each of them. You could even have . You may want to give them names.
Activity 3. Read The Owl & the Pussycat again and think of an adventure that might happen to your 2 animal characters. Draw pictures or act out of each part of the story to help you remember it. Remember it has to have a problem that gets solved and all the characters have to be animals!
Activity 4 Write the story using your phonics mat to help you with your spellings. Remember capital letters and full stops and to check that it makes sense.

Maths Work for Week Beginning Monday 23rd March 2020
Dear Y1 parent,
The focus in Maths this week is position and direction. This involves children understanding turns - half and quarter turns, left and right, forwards and backwards as well as clockwise and anti-clockwise.
I have selected activities that your child will be able to access from Monday 23.3.20 to 27.3.20.
At the end of the week I will be able to see how your child has done with the online activities.
If they complete the work you could play a game, giving your child instructions to get from one spot in the garden to another. They could then give you instructions too. e.g. 2 steps forward, a quarter turn clockwise etc.... You could also create a treasure map on a grid and they have to get to the treasure.
While I understand that this is not an ideal situation for the children -nor indeed for yourselves - I would like to reassure you that I will do all I can to support your child's continued learning at home.
My best wishes to you all,
Suzanne Moore

English Work for Week Beginning 23rd March 2020
We are currently in the middle of a unit of work on narrative poetry, with a focus on The Owl and the Pussycat. So far we have read the poem each day and acted out and sequenced the various parts of the poem. We have also written the poem as a story.
This week we are going to work on answering questions about the poem and identifying rhyming words.
I will be uploading the work for the children over the weekend and adding more information re. Phonics and Spellings in readiness for Monday.
Many thanks,
Suzanne Moore

Wednesday 25th March Update - Reading Comprehension & Maths Website
Hello!
Hope everyone is keeping well.
Just to let you know that I've added a Reading Comprehension activity below. When you open it you'll see a choice of 3 differentiated texts and corresponding question sheets (with answers). Please choose whichever which you feel is most appropriate for your child. These can be completed orally.
I will aim to upload a new reading comprehension each week.
Mr Wassell also informs me that David Walliams is going to be reading a story at 11am every day which I'm sure the children will enjoy. Apparently you can access it at any time, not just 11am. I've added the link to that below too.
On the Maths front, Carol Vorderman's 'The Maths Factor' website has been made available free of charge for all children learning at home. I have tried to register online but due to high demand a message popped up telling me to try again tomorrow. It may be worth having a look - you may be more successful than me! I've added a link below.
In the meantime take care,
Love Mrs Moore
Spellings for Week Beginning 23rd March
Please find below the weekly spellings sheets for the children to practise each day. Your child will know whether they are in Mrs Moss's or my group.
For my group we are focussing on all the different ways in which the ou grapheme can be pronounced. We normally refer to this grapheme as 'mouse in a house' but the children need to know that it can make other sounds aswell.
Mrs Moss's group are working on a number of new phase 5 graphemes
a) Smelly toe oe oe oe
b) Naughty in Autumn au au au
c) Cheeky Monkey ey ey ey
d) Bake a cake a-e a-e a-e
e) Perfect Pete e-e e-e e-e
Topic and email contact for Mrs Bagshaw
Hi everyone,
I hope you are all well and managing at this difficult time. I am thinking of you all and missing the children so much.
Please find below an outline of the topic activities for this week.
The focus this week is finding animals in the environment so you could have an animal hunt in your garden at varies times of the day. After that the children will need to learn about carnivores, herbivore and omnivores. I have added some resources below as well as adding some games to Education City.
Thank you for all your support at this difficult time. My email is stpcmrsbagshaw@icloud.com if you need to contact me with any worries or concerns. I will answer all messages as soon as possible.
Stay safe and lots of love to you all.
